The Inspiration Cube is dedicated to showcasing ‘what’s en vogue’ in the world of modern interior design, and while one cannot predict the future, this section will provide inspiration, highlighting the possibilities available for your home and/or workplace.

This month’s edition focuses on the modern industrial look.

In the height of the industrial revolution, the exposed brick, duct work and pipes of factories were not a desirable look, but simply inevitable. Today, leaving the inner workings of a home and/or office exposed, or even bringing in recycled, raw materials is a strong design statement with emphasis on aesthetic, rather than necessity.

Industrial style devotees may have initiated the style with raw, original and reclaimed materials, but today, many retailers sell items that although brand new, would look more at home in a 19th century factory or barn than in your living room.

What to think about when going for a modern industrial look?

  • • Expose the ceiling, embrace the duct work or exposed beams. If you don’t have beams or duct work to expose, consider adding some metal beams, complemented with simple pendant lighting
  • • Concrete is a great choice for durable counter tops in industrial inspired spaces, it’s also eco-friendly and affordable
  • • Custom steel and laminate cabinets add a nice juxtaposition against reclaimed timber floors
  • • Industrial doesn’t have to mean cold. Use reclaimed wood to create a statement in your space
  • • Concrete walls not only look rustic and suit the industrial style, they also cut down costs by keeping the room cool, acting as a natural air conditioner
  • • Implementation or restoration of factory style windows
